Most SEO checklists give you 40โ60 items with no priority order, which is close to useless for a brand-new site โ you’ll spend a week on things that don’t matter yet instead of the handful that actually determine whether Google finds your site at all. Here are the 10 that matter first, in the order they actually matter.
1. Confirm the site isn’t blocking search engines
Before anything else: check `yoursite.com/robots.txt` and your WordPress Settings โ Reading page. New sites are frequently left in “discourage search engines from indexing this site” mode from development, and every other SEO effort is wasted while this is on.
2. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console
Not optional, not something to “get to later.” A new site with no sitemap submission can take months longer to get discovered organically versus one submitted on day one. This takes five minutes and is the single highest-leverage action on this list.
3. Write real, unique title tags and meta descriptions for every page
Not the default “Home โ YourSiteName” WordPress generates. Every page needs a title that describes what it actually offers, under 60 characters, and a meta description that gives someone a reason to click, under 155 characters. Templated or duplicate titles across pages actively hurt you, not just fail to help.
4. Fix heading hierarchy โ one H1 per page, real H2s below it
New sites built on page builders frequently have zero true H1 tags (styled text that looks like a heading but isn’t one) or multiple H1s on one page. Both confuse search engines about what the page is actually about. Check this directly in the page source, not just visually.
5. Set up Google Analytics 4 and confirm it’s actually tracking (see the full GA4 and Search Console setup guide for the exact sequence)
Not just installed โ verified. A shocking number of new sites have GA4 “installed” but misconfigured (wrong property, tracking code in the wrong place, blocked by a cache plugin) and collect zero real data for weeks before anyone notices.
6. Compress and properly name every image
Images with filenames like `IMG_4821.jpg` and no alt text are a missed opportunity on every single page. Rename to describe the image content, add genuine (not keyword-stuffed) alt text, and compress โ new sites frequently launch with unoptimized images that measurably slow load time, which Google factors into ranking.
7. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile (if location-relevant)
For any founder or business with a physical presence or local service area, this is disproportionately high-leverage and frequently skipped entirely on new sites. It’s free, takes 15 minutes, and starts building local search presence immediately.
8. Internal-link your pages to each other
A brand-new site with 5โ10 pages and zero internal links between them is leaving easy authority-sharing on the table. Every page should link to at least 2 other relevant pages on the site โ this is free and takes an afternoon, not a specialist skill.
9. Set up basic schema markup for your core pages
Organization/Person schema on your homepage and About page, and Article schema on any blog content, at minimum. This doesn’t directly boost rankings but significantly improves how your listing appears in search results and is increasingly relevant to how AI search engines parse and cite your site.
10. Check mobile rendering on an actual phone, not just browser resize
Not the same thing. Actual mobile devices reveal font-size issues, tap-target spacing problems, and horizontal scroll bugs that browser dev-tools “mobile view” frequently misses. Google’s indexing is mobile-first โ a broken mobile experience directly caps your ranking ceiling regardless of desktop quality.
What’s deliberately not on this list
Backlink building, extensive keyword research spreadsheets, and competitor gap analysis are real SEO work โ but they’re premature for a site that hasn’t fixed the fundamentals above. Building backlinks to a site with broken title tags and no sitemap submission is building on an unfinished foundation.

Frequently asked questions
What’s the single most important SEO fix for a new website?
Confirming the site isn’t blocking search engines (check “discourage search engines” setting) and submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console โ both take minutes and have outsized impact on discovery speed.
How long does basic SEO setup take for a new site?
The 10 fixes here typically take 1โ2 focused days for a site with 5โ15 pages, not weeks โ the biggest time cost is usually writing genuine title tags and meta descriptions for each page.
Should a new site focus on backlinks or on-page SEO first?
On-page fundamentals first. Backlinks pointing to a site with broken title tags, no sitemap, or blocked indexing waste the value of those links until the fundamentals are fixed.
Does Google Business Profile matter for an online-only startup?
Less directly, but if there’s any local service area or physical presence at all, it’s still worth the 15-minute setup โ it’s free and starts building local search presence immediately.
